Junior English Language Program: A Week of Culture & Skills

Brisbane Junior English Language Program:
A Week of Culture & Skills
Monday, 23 March 2026: Australian Food: Cooking & Recipes
The week kicked off with a delicious start as students in our JHP English language program explored Australian food and cooking vocabulary.
In the afternoon, students took part in a Cooking Activity, where they worked in groups to create fairy bread and Weetbix slices. This task encouraged clear sequencing, descriptive language, and confident speaking, with a bit of MasterChef energy thrown in.
Tuesday, 24 March 2026: Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories
Tuesday introduced students to Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, with a focus on storytelling, cultural understanding, and descriptive language. Students discussed themes, characters, and meanings behind traditional stories.
In the afternoon, students engaged in an Indigenous Art activity, creating their own artworks inspired by Aboriginal styles. They presented their work, explaining symbols and ideas in English, combining creativity with communication.
Wednesday, 25 March 2026: Animals
Wednesday’s lessons focused on animal vocabulary and descriptive language. Students learned how to talk about habitats, behaviours, and characteristics.
Students then delivered mini presentations about animals, building confidence in speaking and organising ideas.
In the afternoon, the Reptile Show gave students a hands-on experience, bringing vocabulary to life as they observed and learned about different reptiles.
Thursday, 26 March 2026: Daily Routines
Thursday centred on daily routines, with students practising how to describe their typical day using clear time expressions and sequencing language.
The afternoon SparkLab session encouraged problem-solving and collaboration through interactive activities, giving students a chance to use English naturally while working together.
Friday, 27 March 2026: Friends & Making Plans
Friday focused on social language, helping students practise making plans, inviting friends, and responding naturally in conversations.
In the afternoon, students participated in a Digital Scavenger Hunt, working in teams to complete tasks and challenges. This activity promoted teamwork, quick thinking, and spontaneous use of English in a fun, competitive setting.
Saturday, 28 March 2026: Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
The week finished with an exciting full-day excursion to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Students explored one of Brisbane’s most iconic wildlife destinations, seeing native Australian animals up close. Throughout the day, students took photos of animals, capturing special moments and creating great, lasting memories to share with one another.
This week blended culture, creativity, and real-world communication. From cooking videos to storytelling, presentations, and excursions, students had constant opportunities to use English in meaningful ways. Confidence is growing, friendships are forming, and the classroom continues to extend far beyond four walls.
We can’t wait to welcome a new group of students in July-August 2026.
