High School Experience: Brisbane HSP Visit St James College

Last month, students and teachers from BROWNS’ Brisbane High School Preparation (HSP) program participated in an immersive high school experience at St James College in Spring Hill.

The day began with a warm welcome and a campus tour led by Mr. Kaspar Wong (Education Support & International Student Development Officer). It was eye-opening for our students to see a real Australian high school (with students from Year 7 to Year 12). We got a behind-the-scenes look at everything from traditional subjects like Maths and Science to hands-on classes like Design & Technology and Physical Education. We even got to see the students preparing for their whole-school End-of-Term assembly.

The real fun started when our students joined a Design and Technology workshop. Their challenge for the workshop was to create a custom wooden puzzle, combining 3D design skills with woodworking. Learning how to use Auto-CAD and the drill press can be intimidating at first but our students stayed incredibly focused. By the end of the session, every student made a handmade wooden puzzle, with their own names or initials engraved on them.

Lunch was all about making connections. Our group sat down with current international students at St James College, including some familiar faces who actually started their journey at BROWNS! It was great to see the students exchanging stories of school life. Our students also made some time with Mr. Kaspar and Ms. Lisha (International Student Engagement & Marketing Coordinator), asking questions about extracurricular activities and tips to be successful in a local high school.

Seeing St James College firsthand has made our students even more excited to transition into their future high schools. It was truly an unforgettable experience and we look forward to more high school visits!
