English Program for Kids in Melbourne:
March 2026
BROWNS’ Junior Holiday Program was full of both fun, practical English as well as a variety of hands-on experiences that gave students the chance to experience Melbourne and Australian culture first hand. Students were given the chance to build their grammar and vocabulary alongside new friendships and unique experiences inside and outside of the classroom.
Monday, 23 March 2026: Australian Geography and Food
After spending some time getting to know each other, we started off our week sharing what we knew about Australia already, as well as focusing on Australian geography. We discussed some of Australia’s most famous landmarks and explored the biodiversity seen all across the country – and how much it can differ from our homes – utilising new grammar and vocabulary to compare and contrast. After learning about some of Australia’s staple foods, we finished off the day by making our own lamingtons! Although we agreed they were very sweet, much fun was had trying them and sharing the experience of making them together.
Tuesday, 24 March 2026: Australian Animals and SeaLife Aquarium
Tuesday was spent with a thematic focus on Australian animals and wildlife. After learning about Australia’s deeply diverse (and often strange) variety of wildlife, students created their own posters of an Australian animal that caught their interest, detailing things such as its habitat, diet, behaviour and so on – which also allowed us to show off our impressive artwork skills. To end the day, we took a trip to SeaLife Aquarium. We were able to see a large variety of Australian marine life, and by the end of our time there, the penguins had been crowned the highlight by almost everyone. Our trip to the aquarium also gave us a great chance to practise our grammar for identifying similarities and differences between groups of things.
Wednesday, 25 March 2026: Holidays and Australian Artwork
Our midweek lesson focused on national holidays as well as Australian Aboriginal artwork. After some focus on vocabulary and pronunciation through group dictation, we discussed Australian holidays as well as holidays from our home countries, before writing about and presenting our favourite national holidays to the class. Following this, we learnt not only the meaning behind a variety of Aboriginal artwork imagery but also the techniques involved in creating it, eventually having a go at creating our own large, hand-painted collaborative piece. We ended up with a large and very colourful work of art that we put together as a group, incorporating all of our own artistic styles alongside traditional Aboriginal Australian imagery.
Thursday, 26 March 2026: Hobbies and Free Time
Thursday was spent learning a bit more about each other by discussing our hobbies and interests. As well as learning more about one another, we also learnt how to give and respond to invitations. This all culminated in a trip to the ice skating rink in Docklands, where many students were able to show off their ice skating skills and others were able to give it a try for the first time. And although many of us were clutching the walls to begin with, by the end of the day we were all racing each other across the ice and couldn’t believe how fast the time had passed.
Friday, 27 March 2026: Graffiti and Cinema
For our final English lesson, we spent some time consolidating everything we had learnt throughout the week, trying our hand at translating text and a variety of other activities that tested our English knowledge. Afterwards, we took a trip to ACMI, where students could experience a variety of fascinating hands-on exhibitions related to the history of and innovations in video, photography and animation. On our way home, we made sure to take the scenic route through Melbourne’s iconic Hosier Lane, taking in all of the urban artwork that Melbourne is partly famous for in one of the city’s most recognisable sites.
Saturday, 28 March 2026: Melbourne Zoo
For our final day together, we met up at BROWNS in the morning, ready for our trip to Melbourne Zoo. Although the day started out with heavy rain, by the afternoon we were able to enjoy a variety of both native and non-native animals – with the koalas winning the popular vote for best animal, of course! Although we finished the day very tired, we had an enormous amount of fun chatting together and seeing everything Melbourne Zoo had to offer, all while wearing the matching shirts the students had organised themselves.
After returning to BROWNS for the final time, the students all received their certificates of completion and we begrudgingly had to say goodbye – as much as we wanted to stay in the classroom longer! It was definitely a perfect end to a great week of improving our English, experiencing Melbourne, and making new friends, with whom we shared what will hopefully become a week of unforgettable memories spent learning and laughing together.
We can’t wait to welcome a new group of students in July-August 2026.
